The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), in association with the Trainee Doctors Advisory Board (TRAB), has launched a prize to encourage medical students to undertake electives in the area of safeguarding public health.

The winners will also have the opportunity to present their paper at the MHRA.
Background
The MHRA is the government agency responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work, and are acceptably safe. The MHRA is an executive agency of the Department of Health. Our mission is to enhance and safeguard the public’s health by ensuring that medicines and medical devices meet the highest standards of safety, quality, performance and effectiveness.
The Trainee Doctors Advisory Board consists of a group of 15 doctors in training and cross agency representatives from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The group meets bi-annually to promote the safe use of medical devices and medicines and cultivate an understanding and awareness of the MHRA’s functions amongst the wider clinical community.
The MHRA, in association with the Trainee Doctors Advisory Board (TRAB), wishes to encourage medical students to undertake electives in the area of safeguarding public health.
Applications
Applications should be in keeping with the MHRA’s mission statement and may be related to either the MHRA's work in medicines or medical devices. There will be one £500 prize for each category.

Rules
- The prize is open to all medical students attending medical schools within England and Wales.
- Two prizes of £500 will be awarded.
- A prize will be awarded in each of the following categories:
- MHRA's work in medicines
- MHRA's work in medical devices.
- Both prize winners will be expected to attend a TRAB meeting at MHRA headquarters to give a brief presentation following completion of their elective (travel costs will be paid).
- Electives must be undertaken in the next academic year ie 2012 – 2013, either in the UK or abroad.
- Only electronic applications will be accepted.
- A 500 word summary of the proposed elective should be submitted along with a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vita and a letter of confirmation from the student’s clinical sub-dean and elective supervisor.
- The applications will be assessed by the cross agency sub-group of TRAB and then 10 shortlisted proposals will be ranked by the external TRAB members.
- Successful applicants will be notified by 31 August 2012, unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email after this date.
- Prize money will not be released until confirmatory letters are received from the student’s clinical sub-dean or elective supervisor.
