Rea Assist wheelchairs manufactured by Invacare Rea AB.

Rea Assist wheelchairs manufactured by Invacare Rea AB

Wheelchairs with serial numbers in the range 020808103710 to 020808819831 inclusive, manufactured from 01 July 2008 to 30 September 2008 inclusive are all potentially affected. The position and format of the label with the serial number are shown below.

Side and front view of the Rea Assist wheelchair

Due to an ineffective locking mechanism the backrest may suddenly detach and cause the user to fall from the wheelchair, resulting in serious injury.

Invacare Rea AB has identified a problem with a batch of wheelchairs. Some of the batch has ineffective locking mechanisms where the push handle/backrest attaches to the frame. The backrest may suddenly detach from the wheelchair whilst manoeuvring, particularly up or down steps. The problem can be identified by detailed inspection (see appendix). To rectify the problem replacement parts are now available from Invacare UK.

Invacare UK issued a Field Safety Notice in August 2009 but has been unable to trace all wheelchairs, particularly where they have been passed onto second or subsequent users.
  • Trace all Rea Assist wheelchairs with a serial number in the range 020808103710 to 020808819831 inclusive.
  • Inspect the lower backrest frame and check the alignment of the locking mechanism with the required indent (see appendix).
  • Where the indent is missing or misaligned contact Invacare to arrange replacement of the affected parts.
