Posture (hip) belts for use on paediatric seating systems and buggies. Manufactured and supplied by R82 between 27 May 2008 and 31 August 2008.

Posture (hip) belts intended for use on a range of R82 supportive seating systems and buggies for children with severe posture problems. They have been supplied with new seating systems and buggies, and also as accessories or spares.
The affected belts were manufactured in Taiwan and supplied in the UK by R82 UK Ltd between 27 May 2008 and 31 August 2008 inclusive. The batch numbers of these affected belts are:
85427-1
85427-2
85427-3
85427-4
85427-5.
However, the batch numbers are only marked on the outer packaging in which the belt is delivered from R82 UK and is not on the belt itself.
To assist in identifying the affected belts, the manufacturer has given the following guidance:
- Belts carrying a full label showing ‘Made in Taiwan’ are affected.
- Belts carrying a label showing ‘Made in Taiwan’ with one bottom corner cut off are not affected as they were made from the correct material.
- Belts carrying a label showing ‘Made in Denmark’ are not affected.
Example of labelling of affected belt

Examples of labelling of unaffected belts
The belt has been manufactured from material that is too thin and this could slip through the buckles when the belt is in use. Consequently the occupant could slide down in the seat and suffer positional asphyxiation.
R82 in Denmark has identified five batches of hip belts that have straps that were manufactured from webbing material that is too thin. The effects of this will only become apparent to the user or carer if the belt extends to its maximum adjustment and the occupant loses postural support or slips down in their seat.
R82 has issued a Field Safety Notice intended to inform users of the need to obtain replacement belts. The response has not been adequate despite follow up by the manufacturer. Also, the FSN does not include the labelling detail and R82 do not have traceability to users where the belt has been supplied as an accessory or replacement part or where the buggy or seating system has been passed on to second or subsequent end users.
General information on the use of posture belts is also given in the MHRA’s Medical Device Alert MDA/2008/037.
- Trace all affected posture belts.
- Contact R82 UK to obtain replacement belts.
- Arrange for the new belts to be fitted in accordance with the original instructions for use supplied with each seating system.
