MHRA statement on metal-on-metal hip implants

30 January 2012

In April 2010, the MHRA published Medical Device Alert MDA/2010/033 providing advice to clinicians on the management of patients implanted with metal on metal hip replacements.

In May and September 2010 the MHRA published two Medical Device Alerts - MDA/2010/044 and MDA/2010/069 on ASR™ hip replacement implants manufactured by DePuy International Ltd to ensure appropriate follow-up is considered for all patients already implanted with these particular metal on metal hip replacement implants.

An MHRA spokesperson said, "On the evidence currently available the majority of patients implanted with metal-on-metal hip replacements are at low risk of developing any serious problems.

"We are continuing to closely monitor all evidence. This needs more analysis before any conclusions can be drawn and further advice given.

"We have already taken prompt action to investigate safety concerns and have provided advice on patient management to relevant healthcare professionals.

"If patients have any questions they should speak to their orthopaedic surgeon."
