Please note: In October and November 2010, the MHRA moved from its Market Towers address to a new location on Buckingham Palace Road. Please go to the contact us section of the website for updated contact details.
In February 2009, the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) issued advice on over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for children. This included the advice that products containing the specified active ingredients should no longer be used in children under the age of six years and products indicated for children aged six to 12 years should carry stronger warnings.
Over 98% of variations received from marketing authorisation holders to introduce the necessary contraindications and warnings have now been granted, with a few outstanding issues being dealt with by the applicants. Products with new warnings will now start to appear on the market.
In addition, the CHM advised that all liquid preparations containing the specified ingredients should be supplied in a child resistant container (CRC), and we have issued guidance to marketing authorisation holders on their introduction.
