Regulation of blood: Updates to guidance on the electronic issue of blood components and the requirement for blood facilities to submit compliance reports

Please note: In October and November 2010, the MHRA moved from its Market Towers address to a new location on Buckingham Palace Road. Please go to the contact us section of the website for updated contact details.

We have issued updates on the following:

Electronic issue of blood components
We have prepared a draft guidance note on the electronic issue of blood components following concerns identified during inspections of hospital blood banks. Stakeholders are encouraged to review this document, and provide comments electronically to bcr@mhra.gsi.gov.uk before close of business on 9 October 2009.

Guidance on the requirement for blood facilities to submit compliance reports in 2010.
We have prepared guidance to clarify situations where blood ‘facilities’, that do not perform pre-transfusion testing (e.g. small satellite hospitals, private clinics, hospices etc.), may be required to submit an annual compliance report. There is no requirement for affected ‘facilities’ to retrospectively submit a compliance report for the reporting year 2008-09.
