Warnings about products marketed for treatment of erectile dysfunction

The MHRA has received several warnings from overseas authorities about seven products (Power 1 Walnut, China Vigour, Herb Vigour, Natural Vigour, VPXL No. 1 Dietary Supplement for Men, Blue Steel and Hero) being marketed as dietary supplements or "herbal Viagra" for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. All have been found to contain prescription only medicines such as glibenclamide, an anti diabetic medication or sildenafil and its analogue, nor-acetildenafil, and tadalafil. Sildenafil and tadalafil are used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. These medicines should only be supplied on prescription from by a Doctor.

Power 1 Walnut, was highlighted by the Singapore Authorities following the death of a middle aged man and other serious reports of adverse drug reactions. The medicine claims to contain only natural herbal ingredients and is marketed for sexual enhancement in both men and women. Test results were positive for prescription only medicines glibenclamide, and sildenafil. The patients suffering adverse reactions following consumption of Power 1 Walnut were either found unconscious at home or with severe symptoms of very low blood sugar. The product was labelled as being manufactured by Guangzhou Xinkauili Limited Company. In total there are 23 confirmed cases of serious adverse reactions to Power 1 Walnut, with another 53 suspected cases.

Other warnings have been issued by the Public Health Supervisory Service in the Netherlands about China Vigour, and Herb Vigour found to contain nor-acetildenafil and tadalafil. A third product Natural Vigour is suspected to contain prescription only medicines but is still to be tested. The capsules are manufactured by Kunming Dali. VPXL no. 1 Dietary Supplement for Men was also found to contain tadalafil after being discovered by the Luxemburg Authorities and tested on import into the country. The US Food and Drug Administration have also issued warnings to consumers not to purchase or use Blue Steel or Hero products which contain undeclared and potent substances similar to sildenafil. The products are promoted as natural dietary supplements and sold over the internet. The undeclared ingredients in these products may interact with prescription drugs (such as those for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease) and can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

Whilst there is no evidence that these are on the UK market consumers are warned to be cautious. Consumers are reminded that any medicines containing sildenafil, tadalafil and glibenclamide should only be supplied on prescription from a Doctor.
