The Freedom of Information Act, the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Human Rights Act 1998 are linked. Together they are intended to help maintain a fair balance between the rights and interests of individuals, in particular between the freedom to process information on the one hand, and rights of privacy on the other.
The Data Protection Act 1998 implements the European Data Protection Directive (European Directive 95/46/EC) in the UK.
