Data protection

The Data Protection Act 1998 implements the European Data Protection Directive (European Directive 95/46/EC) in the UK.

The text of the Data Protection Act can be found on the Office of Public Section Information website:

 Data Protection Act 1998

The Data Protection Act 1998, Human Rights Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act are linked. Together they are intended to help maintain a fair balance between the rights and interests of individuals, in particular between the freedom to process information on the one hand, and rights of privacy on the other.

Again, subject to a limited range of exemptions, this Act gives an individual the right to access all personal data held on them by an organisation. If you want to exercise your right to access personal data we may hold on you, then please write to Martin Bagwell, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, Room 16-140, Market Towers, 1 Nine Elms Lane, London SW8 5NQ, or e-mail martin.bagwell@mhra.gsi.gov.uk.
